DR ROBYN RAUTENBACH

Dr Robyn Rautenbach is an Ophthalmologist with formal training and experience in general ophthalmology, and medical and surgical conditions of the retina.

She is originally from the Eastern Cape and completed her undergraduate medical training at Stellenbosch University in 2002 before returning to the Eastern Cape for her internship and community service. She started her journey into ophthalmology in East London in 2005 before returning to Tygerberg Hospital & Stellenbosch University for her specialist ophthalmology training in 2008.

After her training, she completed a one-year sub-speciality clinical fellowship in medical and surgical conditions of the retina at Stellenbosch University (2012/2013). She was the recipient of a Discovery Foundation Academic Fellowship Award in 2013, allowing her to conduct and participate in innovative stem cell research pertaining to neuro-ophthalmological condition(s) and obtain a further master’s degree. In 2016 she undertook further surgical retinal training at the European Vitreoretinal Training School in Bremen, Germany.

From 2013 to 2019 she worked as a full-time specialist ophthalmologist and head of the retina service at Tygerberg Hospital, and a lecturer at Stellenbosch University. She is still affiliated to the University and assists with undergraduate teaching and examinations. Dr Rautenbach also serves on the Academic Advisory Committee of the South African Vitreoretinal Society and Retina South Africa.

Dr Rautenbach initially moved into private practice in Bellville in 2019 (Drs Joubert & Rautenbach) and relocated her practice to Claremont at the start of 2025 to be closer to home and her children’s schools.

She is a competent general ophthalmologist and manages conditions like cataract and glaucoma. She is particularly interested and skilled in medical and surgical conditions of the retina, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and vitreoretinal interface disorders.

She is married to Mark, a busy general surgeon, and has two children, Joseph and Lily. She is a keen runner and novice Padel player and enjoys spending time in nature with her family and friends.
